In 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released to the world, where many video gamers could finally get their hands on the much awaited game. Ocarina of Time is a beautiful, superb game, with an exciting and wonderful storyline as well as revolutionary gameplay and graphics for its time period that set the standards for other games of its genre. It had rich, endearing characters that pulled one straight into the world of Hyrule, the game's setting, and kept its players fascinated. Many gamers around the world fell in love with this timeless game, and even today it is considered one of the most widely-known, classic games.

Two years later, Nintendo released another game heavily related to Ocarina of Time: Majora's Mask. It involved the same main character, fondly dubbed the Hero of Time, set in a timezone about a year after the events of the previous game. Majora's Mask, while deviating off a few of the Zelda series traditions such as not actually having Zelda appear herself inside the game, far surpassed Ocarina of Time in its heartfelt storyline and gameplay, as it was created to involve the aspects of general life that Nintendo did not have room for in Ocarina of Time—heavy character interaction as Link, the Hero of Time, learns how to cope with others and how his choices and actions affect their lives as well; and deep and profound messages concerning life, such as forgiveness, love, friendship, life and death, dark and light, time and eternity, childhood and adulthood, and what it means to grow and transition from each part of life to the next.

While both these games from Nintendo were profound in their day, they are now beginning to get lost among all the new games that have been released and are being released. New technology has been discovered, making it possible to make graphics more beautiful and stunning than ever, as well as dynamic gameplay and realism. These new games, however, focus less on storyline and more on the visual aspect, and certainly do not even come close to Nintendo's masterpieces of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask in storyline and plot regards. Being one who has played many games, I can vouch that, of all the ones I have played, none can measure up to Majora's Mask's deep psychological storyline, and the only ones that even come near its general range were still produced by Nintendo.

In 2010, it was officially announced that Nintendo was going to create a remake for its classical Ocarina of Time, updating its graphics and gameplay, yet keeping the feel of the original game's storyline and plot. Screenshots were also released at the time, and they show how the remade graphics recapture the look of the game with a sense of both newness and familiarity. Fans around the world buzzed with excitement about the remake of this wonderful game, released in the Spring of 2011. However, as Ocarina of Time has been remade and has received such positive feedback, I would like to protest for a remake of its following game, Majora's Mask. Besides the fact that the two games heavily complement one another, Majora's Mask's deep and rich tale would be a wonderful addition to a market where storylines and original plots are rather lacking. A remake for the game would allow more players who are not interested in the older games and their obsolete graphics to be able to play the game and adore it for what it is. As I have mentioned above, Majora's Mask touches on many subjects that Ocarina of Time could not, due to its limitations with the direction of its own storyline. However, with the game of Majora's Mask set in a small world in a span of only three in-game days, in which the player keeps jumping back and forth through time, allows one to get a far better grasp of the characters' personalities, their individual lives, the different ways people react and how to cope and get along with them, etc. Majora's Mask shows the players the need for compassion, love, and forgiveness, as well as consideration for others, such as the outcome of how actions do and will affect other people besides the individual. It teaches about the cycles of life, how one grows from a small child into a mature adult, and what happens if this necessary requirement of life is not met; it teaches that one needs to learn to let go of things, because anything inside of time will never last, and that when one does not do this, he or she has an unhealthy relationship with life, and will act like a child—never wanting change, never wanting to forgive or let go…

Many people have commented that this game "changed their life" due to its unique and meaningful storylines—something that most games tend to leave out now, as technology presses for more impression factor, less thinking factor. A remake of this wonderful game could possibly change the video gaming market if it is successful. Whenever a game is released that hits a lot of sales, the creators attempt to research why this happens; perhaps if the game creators realized that storyline can and should have a massive impact on the market, they would turn their focus on that instead. Overall, there are many reasons why this game should be remade, and I know many fans would agree with me, as I have discussed this very thing with them.

About This Essay

This was actually written in December 2, 2010, for a Creative Writing "protest" essay. It could be about protesting for or against something, so I thought that this would be an excellent topic. And lo and behold, now Operation Moonfall has started, and what better time to post this to deviantART than now? I hope you enjoy, and please promote Operation Moonfall to the world! Make some noise! Let us fans be heard!

Miscellaneous Information

:bulletred: I know that the title "Hero of Time" is not a fandub. What I meant by "fondly dubbed" was that usually people use this term to specify which Link they are talking about, and most people use that in a "fond" manner. Thus.
:bulletorange: Zelda actually does make a small appearance in Majora's Mask in a flashback scene when you retrieve your ocarina from the Skull Kid. It's to teach you (or help you remember) the Song of Time, one of the most important songs in the game. Due to the fact that it's a very brief, non-color cutscene, I don't think it truly counts toward Zelda "being" in the game. She is not very relevant to the storyline whatsoever, and that's why I mentioned it being one of the differences of Majora's Mask compared to the traditional icons of the series.
:bulletyellow: If anyone can point me to the proper e-mail address of the Nintendo authorities overseeing the possible remake of Majora's Mask for the 3Ds, that would be fantastic and much appreciated, as I would like to mail this article to them.
:bulletgreen: There are several good articles by Hylian Dan ( ~Capasin ) that may be of your interest in checking out if you want to know more about the symbolism and messages within Majora's Mask. Given, these articles are theory and not officially stated to be true, but there is enough legitimate merit to their points that I think they make sense. The articles are Immortal Childhood, The Soul of a Game, The Message of Majora's Mask, and The Stone Tower: Why Termina Was Doomed.
:bulletblue: I own one of the few groups that is dedicated solely to Majora's Mask on my main account, =raxgond. Please feel free to join #Mask-of-Majora if you love and support the game.
:bulletpurple: Please feel free to share this article with friends, on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and other social sites. Don't forget to link back here and credit me, however. Thank you!
:bulletred: I also created a video on YouTube to help spread the word! Please check it out!
